North Carolina Contractor Licensing

The State of North Carolina requires contractors of projects in excess of $40,000 to be licensed as a Building Contractor. As a General Contractor in NC you can be licensed as a builder under the two main classification of NC Building Contractor or NC Residential Contractor.

North Carolina classifies three levels of licensure for Building Contractors:  Limited, Intermediate and Unlimited.  It is important to note that the level of licensure is merely a financial distinction; the exam is the same for each level.

• A Limited License permits a builder to construct projects up to $750,000 cost. Applicants must submit evidence of financial stability and a net worth in excess of $17,000. Alternatively, a $250,000 surety bond may be submitted to the board.
• An Intermediate License permits a builder to construct projects up to $1,500,000.  Applicant requirements for this license are the same, except that they must be able to demonstrate a net worth of $75,000 or more.
• An Unlimited License has no restrictions regarding the cost of a project.  Applicant requirements are also the same, except that their net worth must be $150,000 or greater.
